There are quite a few differences between this unpublished cover for Avengers 178 featuring the Beast and the published version, both by George Perez.
(Professor H. and Tom Brevoort have both brought it to my attention that the published cover is by John Buscema.)
Image from The Marvel Age of Comics:
Personally, I like the first one better - the full-body Beast looks more lithe and athletic, rather than so muscular and inhuman. And the scowls on both faces in the published versions are much to mean for Hank McCoy. I prefer the combo of the smile and terror in the two faces of the unpublished version.
ReplyDeleteNever knew there was a Perez cover that wasn't used. WHY THE HELL WASN'T IT? It looks BETTER than the published one.
ReplyDeleteThat was, by the way, one of the most F***ing WEIRD comics Marvel ever published at the time. Total fill-in-- Steve Gerber (on acid?), Carmine Infantino on layouts, and just to really drive home how demented it was, Rudy Nebres on finishes. WHOA. And a story that felt like you almost needed to be on drugs to understand. Ralph Bakshi would have loved it.
That published cover is by John Buscema, not George.
